No one seems to miss Joe Pantalone, either. Even as the Mayor has struggled over the past year, I’ve yet to hear anyone express their profound disappointment that George Smitherman isn’t running things. The best argument in favour of a Mayor Ford mayoralty remains what it was 12 months ago - on election day, he was the best option left standing. Ford’s first year in office can’t be assessed in a vacuum. There is no way to sugarcoat his mistakes (refusal to attend any of the city’s Pride events), deny his frequent reversals (police staffing levels) or get around the fact that the man who pledged to avoid service cutbacks by sniffing out the gravy is now pushing for service cutbacks due to an acute gravy shortage.īut Mr. Ford certainly hasn’t lived up to his own lofty promises and the high expectations of a citizenry fed up with the status quo. There’s rarely anything so satisfactory and soul-warming as a hard-earned, “I told you so.”įair enough, and point well taken. This has given some critics of the Mayor, such as my friend John Moore, cause to declare the Ford administration a failure and contentedly gloat.
